How to Use TITA Questions in CAT 2026 to Boost Your Score Without Negative Marking

Learn what TITA questions are in CAT 2026. Discover strategies to solve non-MCQs, section-wise distribution, and how to score without negative marking.

One of the most unique aspects of the Common Admission Test (CAT) is the inclusion of TITA (Type In The Answer) questions. Introduced in 2015, TITA questions are non-MCQ questions where candidates do not choose from multiple-choice options. Instead, they must type their calculated answer using an on-screen virtual keyboard.

The biggest advantage of TITA questions is simple yet powerful: they carry zero negative marking. While a wrong MCQ answer deducts 1 mark, a wrong TITA answer results in 0 marks deducted.

In this guide, we will analyze the role of TITA questions in the CAT exam 2026, highlight historical patterns, and discuss strategies to exploit this feature to boost your overall percentile.

The TITA Question Distribution: What to Expect

On average, TITA questions make up 25% to 30% of the entire CAT paper. The section-wise distribution typically looks like this:

SectionTotal QuestionsExpected TITA QuestionsQuestion Types for TITA
VARC245–7 QuestionsParagraph Jumbles, Odd Sentence Out
DILR204–6 QuestionsSpecific numeric questions within logical sets
Quant (QA)226–8 QuestionsEquations, integers, arithmetic values
Total6615–21 QuestionsUp to 63 Marks without negative marking!

Why TITA Questions are a Scoring Goldmine

Many candidates avoid TITA questions because the lack of options makes them feel more difficult. However, this is a psychological trap. You should treat TITA questions as a massive opportunity for the following reasons:

1. Zero Downside Risk

In a highly competitive exam like CAT, negative marks are the primary reason percentiles drop. TITA questions allow you to guess or make calculated attempts without any fear of penalization. If you solve a TITA question and get an answer, you must enter it—there is absolutely nothing to lose.

2. Lower Competition Density

Because there are no options, many test-takers spend less time on TITA questions or skip them altogether. If you prepare specifically for TITA formats, you gain a distinct edge over the average candidate.

Section-Wise TITA Strategies

To maximize your TITA score in CAT 2026, implement these section-specific techniques:

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

In VARC, TITA questions are concentrated in the Verbal Ability section—specifically Paragraph Jumbles.

  • The Challenge: Without options, arranging 4 or 5 sentences in the correct order is statistically difficult (1 in 24 chance for 4 sentences).
  • The Strategy: Do not guess randomly. Find the mandatory pairs first. Once you have identified that sentence B must follow sentence D, and sentence A is the opening sentence, the structure becomes clear. Because there is no negative marking, always enter your best logical sequence.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

In DILR, TITA questions usually require a specific numeric entry (e.g., "How many students liked both physics and chemistry?").

  • The Challenge: You cannot work backward from options to solve the set.
  • The Strategy: Solve the set normally. Once your logical matrix or Venn diagram is complete, filling in the TITA values is simple. If you are unable to complete a set but have partially filled a table, use the partial data to make an educated guess on the TITA questions.

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

In QA, TITA questions are highly common in Algebra, Arithmetic, and Number Systems.

  • The Challenge: You cannot plug in options (a common technique in QA MCQ questions).
  • The Strategy:
    • Focus on integer-based answers. Many QA TITA questions are designed to have clean integer answers (e.g., 5, 12, 120).
    • Use dimensional analysis and unit checks.
    • If your calculation yields a fractional value, read the question carefully to see if it asks for the "nearest integer" or "absolute value."

Crucial Tips to Avoid Common TITA Pitfalls

  • Do not spend too much time: Because there is no negative marking, students often get stuck trying to solve TITA questions to the very end, wasting precious time. Apply a time-limit (e.g., 2.5 minutes per math TITA question). If you cannot solve it, enter a calculated guess and move on.
  • Check the typing format: The system only accepts numeric inputs (and minus/decimal points where applicable). Make sure you type exactly what is asked. If the question asks for "ratio of work completed by A to B" and the ratio is 2:3, do not type "2:3"—check if the question asks for a decimal equivalent like "0.67" or if it asks for the value of a specific variable.
  • Attempt every TITA question: In the final 2 minutes of any section, if you have unattempted TITA questions, do not leave them blank. Put in reasonable numbers (like 0, 1, 2, or 10 in QA) before the timer runs out. A random guess has a non-zero chance of being correct, and there is no penalty!
