10 Proven Tips to Crack CAT 2026: The IIM Topper's Secret
Planning to crack CAT 2026? Follow these 10 expert tips to score a 99+ percentile. Learn the secrets of question selection, accuracy, and mock test analysis used by IIM toppers.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is less of a math exam and more of a stress management and decision-making test. With over 3 lakh candidates expected to appear for CAT 2026, standing out requires a strategy that goes beyond just solving textbooks.
Here are the 10 proven tips to help you secure a seat in the elite IIMs.
🎯 Benchmark your prep today!
1. Understand the "2-Hour Battle" Pattern
CAT 2026 will likely follow the 66-question, 120-minute format.
- VARC: 24 Questions (40 Mins)
- DILR: 20 Questions (40 Mins)
- QA: 22 Questions (40 Mins) You cannot jump between sections. Treat each 40-minute window as a separate "mini-exam."
2. Master Arithmetic (The King of Quant)
Almost 40-50% of the Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section is Arithmetic (Percentages, Profit & Loss, Averages, Time & Work, Speed). If you master Arithmetic and basic Algebra, you are already halfway to a 95+ percentile.
3. Read Diverse Genres for VARC
Don't just read the news. CAT Reading Comprehension (RC) often features passages from:
- Sociology & Philosophy
- Technology & AI
- Economy & Global Affairs
- Biology & Nature Start reading Aeon Essays, The Guardian Long Reads, and The Economist daily.
4. Question Selection is Everything (DILR Secret)
In Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), you don't need to solve all 4 sets.
- The Pro Tip: Use the first 5 minutes to scan all 4 sets. Pick the 2 easiest sets and solve them with 100% accuracy. That alone can fetch you a 98+ percentile in this section.
5. Accuracy > Attempt Volume
The biggest percentile killer in CAT is Negative Marking (-1).
- Attempting 40 questions with 90% accuracy is far better than attempting 60 questions with 60% accuracy.
- In CAT, what you skip is as important as what you solve.
6. Simulate the Exam Environment
Taking a mock test on your bed with music on is useless.
- Sit on a chair, use a mouse (not a laptop trackpad), and avoid all distractions.
- Try taking mocks during your actual exam slot (e.g., 8:30 AM, 12:30 PM, or 4:30 PM) to train your brain.
7. The 2X Rule of Mock Analysis
If you take a 2-hour mock, you MUST spend at least 4 hours analyzing it.
- Review why you got a question wrong.
- Find a faster way to solve the ones you got right.
- Check the solutions for questions you skipped.
8. Build Concept Clarity before Speed
Don't rush to use "shortcuts" and "tricks" in the first 3 months. Shortcuts only work when your foundations are solid. Understand the logic behind the formula, and speed will follow naturally.
9. Don't Ignore TITA Questions
Type In The Answer (TITA) questions have No Negative Marking. Never leave a TITA question unattempted, even if you have to make an educated guess.
10. Mental Stamina is a Skill
Solving complex math after 80 minutes of intense reading (VARC) and logic (DILR) is exhausting. Build your stamina by solving 2-hour sectional tests regularly.
