Total Seats in NITs 2026: State-wise Seat Distribution for B.Tech Admissions

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are among the most sought-after engineering colleges in India, especially for candidates who qualify through the JEE Main examination. With 31 NITs distributed across the country, knowing the seat distribution is key to securing your preferred branch.

For the 2026-27 session, the total number of seats in the 31 NITs is estimated to be approximately 24,525+.

Total Seats in Top 10 NITs (Expected 2026)

While NIT seats remain fairly stable, minor adjustments are made every year for female-only seats and new B.Tech specializations.

Special Seat Quotas in NITs

Unlike IITs, NITs have a Home State Quota system:

• Home State Quota (50%): Seats reserved for candidates belonging to the state where the NIT is located.
• Other State Quota (50%): Seats open to candidates from all other states and Union Territories.

NIT Admission 2026: JoSAA and CSAB

Admission to all NITs is conducted through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for the first 6 rounds, followed by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for the vacant seats if any remain.
