Eligibility Criteria for SBI PO 2026

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to apply for the Probationary Officer posts:

1. Educational Qualification (As of Application Close)

  • Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a recognized university or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Central Government.
  • Final Year Candidates: Those in their final year or semester of graduation can apply provisionally. However, if called for the interview, they must produce proof of having passed the graduation examination on or before the specified cutoff date.

2. Age Limit (As of April 1, 2026)

  • Minimum Age: 21 Years
  • Maximum Age: 30 Years
  • Candidates must have been born not earlier than April 2, 1996, and not later than April 1, 2005 (both dates inclusive).

3. Upper Age Relaxation

Relaxation in the upper age limit is provided to various reserved categories as follows:

SBI PO Selection Process & Exam Pattern

The SBI PO selection process is a multi-layered filter designed to test speed, conceptual clarity, communication skills, and personality. It is divided into three distinct phases:

Phase I: Preliminary Examination (Online)

The Prelims exam is qualifying in nature and does not count toward the final merit list. It consists of an objective test of 100 marks conducted online for a duration of 1 hour.

There are no sectional cutoffs in the prelims exam; candidates are shortlisted for the Mains based on their aggregate marks.

  • Negative Marking: 1/4th (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Phase II: Mains Examination (Online)

Candidates numbering approximately 10 times the number of vacancies in each category are shortlisted for the Mains. The Mains exam consists of an Objective Test (200 marks) and a Descriptive Test (30 marks). Both are conducted online on the same day.

The objective test has 4 sections with separate sectional timings:

2. Mains Descriptive Test (30 Minutes, 30 Marks) - REVISED PATTERN

The Descriptive Test evaluates written English communication skills and is conducted online. For the 2026 recruitment cycle, the test structure has been revised to focus on more practical corporate and analytical writing formats:

  • Total Marks: 30 Marks
  • Number of Questions: 3 (Candidates get choices for each)
    1. Email Writing (10 Marks)
    2. Situation Analysis (10 Marks)
    3. Report or Precis Writing (10 Marks)

Phase III: Psychometric Test, Group Exercise & Interview

Candidates qualifying in the Mains exam are shortlisted for Phase III.

  1. Psychometric Test: This is a personality assessment conducted to profile candidate traits. It is qualifying in nature and the results are presented to the interview panel to aid evaluation.
  2. Group Exercise (GE): Carries 20 marks. Candidates participate in group discussions or group task exercises.
  3. Interview: Carries 30 marks. Panel members evaluate the candidate's suitability for banking leadership roles.

Final Merit List Calculation

The final selection is made on the basis of candidate scores in the Mains Exam (Phase II) and the Group Exercise/Interview (Phase III). Preliminary Exam marks are not added.

  • Mains Examination (Phase II): Normalized to 75 Marks (Out of 230 actual marks)
  • Group Exercise & Interview (Phase III): Normalized to 25 Marks (Out of 50 actual marks)
  • Total Combined Score: 100 Marks
