All About the GMAT Exam (Focus Edition): Top Colleges & Cutoffs (2025-2026)

For decades, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) has been the gold standard for business school admissions globally. However, in 2024, the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) implemented the most massive overhaul in the exam’s history, introducing the GMAT Focus Edition.

If you are planning to apply for an MBA program in 2025 or 2026, here is your ultimate guide to understanding the new exam, its structure, fees, and the top colleges worldwide (and in India) accepting it.

1. What is the GMAT Focus Edition?

The GMAT Focus Edition entirely replaced the classic GMAT on February 1, 2024. It is designed to be leaner, more flexible, and tightly aligned with the skills required in modern business environments (like heavy data literacy).

Key Changes from the Classic GMAT:

  • Shorter Duration: The exam is now only 2 hours and 15 minutes (down from over 3 hours).
  • No Essay: The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) has been completely removed.
  • No Geometry: Geometry has been scrapped from the Quantitative section.
  • Adaptive Flexibility: You can now bookmark and review questions, and edit up to three answers per section!

2. Exam Structure, Scoring, & Fees

The GMAT Focus Edition comprises three equally weighted sections, each lasting 45 minutes:

  1. Quantitative Reasoning (21 Questions): Focuses heavily on algebra and arithmetic fundamentals.
  2. Verbal Reasoning (23 Questions): Tests Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning (Sentence Correction is gone!).
  3. Data Insights (20 Questions): A brand-new section assessing data literacy, combining old Integrated Reasoning and Data Sufficiency question types. (You get an on-screen calculator for this section!)

The New Scoring Scale (205 to 805)

Say goodbye to the iconic "700+ club." The new scoring scale ranges from 205 to 805, in 10-point increments. All three sections are scored from 60 to 90 and contribute equally to your final total. GMAT Focus Edition scores are valid for 5 years.

Exam Fees (In India)

  • Test Center Exam: ~$275 USD (Approx. ₹23,000)
  • Online Exam: ~$300 USD (Approx. ₹25,000)

3. Top Global Business Schools & GMAT Cutoffs

The GMAT remains the primary entry ticket to the world's most elite business schools. Because the scoring scale shifted down (a 685 on the Focus Edition is roughly equivalent to a 740 on the Classic), the "median" scores look lower than they used to.

  • Harvard Business School (USA): Median GMAT (Focus): 685
  • Stanford GSB (USA): Median GMAT (Classic/Equivalent): 730
  • The Wharton School (USA): Median GMAT: 732
  • INSEAD (France/Singapore): Average GMAT: 710
  • London Business School (UK): Average GMAT: 708

4. Top Indian MBA Colleges Accepting GMAT

You don't have to go abroad to leverage your GMAT score. Many tier-1 Indian business schools use it, particularly for 1-year Executive MBA programs (PGPX) and some flagship 2-year programs.

Indian School of Business (ISB)

ISB only accepts GMAT and GRE scores. It offers world-class 1-year (PGP) and 2-year (PGP YL) programs.

  • Expected GMAT Cutoff (Focus): 655 - 675+
  • Expected GMAT Cutoff (Classic): 710 - 720+
  • Holistic Evaluation: A 700+ doesn't guarantee a seat, and a 650 doesn't automatically mean rejection. ISB heavily weighs your essays and work experience.

SPJIMR (Mumbai)

A top-tier institute that accepts GMAT for its premier PGDM program, placing heavy emphasis on a candidate's overall profile.

  • Expected GMAT Cutoff: ~85th Percentile
  • Safe Score: 660 - 680 (Classic) or 620+ (Focus Edition)

BITSoM (Mumbai)

Backed by BITS Pilani, BITSoM has rapidly emerged as a top private B-school with spectacular placements and global faculty.

  • Expected GMAT Range: 650 - 750
  • Median Safe Score: ~690

Great Lakes Institute of Management (Chennai & Gurgaon)

Great Lakes accepts the GMAT for both its fast-track 1-Year PGPM and 2-Year PGDM programs.

  • Safe Score: 600+ (Aim for 650+ to be considered highly competitive)

The IIMs (For Executive/1-Year MBA)

While Indian students must take the CAT for the flagship 2-year PGP programs at IIMs, the GMAT is accepted for their elite 1-year Executive programs designed for experienced professionals.

  • IIM Ahmedabad (PGPX): 700 - 740
  • IIM Bangalore (EPGP): 710 - 750
  • IIM Calcutta (PGPEX): 700 - 740

Final Strategy: Is the GMAT right for you?

If you are targeting an international MBA, the GMAT is mandatory.

If you plan to stay in India, the GMAT makes a lot of sense if:

  1. You have 2+ years of work experience and want to target ISB or the 1-year MBA programs at Great Lakes, IIM A, B, and C.
  2. You want the flexibility of testing throughout the year (unlike the CAT, which happens only once in November).
  3. Your verbal logic, data interpretation, and English reasoning are stronger than your core computational math skills.

Start preparing at least 3-4 months before your targeted test date, and rely heavily on official GMAC mock tests to gauge your pacing under the new 2-hour and 15-minute format!
